Apptis Delivers New Release of the Defense Health Services Systems (DHSS) Program Office’s Medical Surveillance System
The Electronic System for the Early Notification of Community-based Epidemics (ESSENCE) is used by military public health officials, epidemiologists, and preventive medicine providers worldwide
Chantilly, VA — November 12, 2008 — Apptis, Inc., a leading provider of IT and communications services to the federal marketplace, announced today that Block 2 of the Electronic System for the Early Notification of Community-based Epidemics (ESSENCE) has been completed and successfully deployed to end users worldwide. Working with the Defense Health Services Systems (DHSS) Program Office in support of the Military Health System (MHS), Apptis has provided the services and support to enhance ESSENCE’s capabilities for expanded medical surveillance using new data sets (laboratory orders and radiology orders); the flexibility to establish user-defined surveillance criteria; more advanced querying and reporting capabilities for the end users; increased security and security-related features; plus improvements on system administration components.
“ESSENCE is a critical component of our nation’s military health system. By monitoring and tracking various reports of infectious diseases around the world, it can alert public health officials of precarious trends or unique outbreaks early – in advance of full blown epidemics,” said Bert Notini, chairman and CEO of Apptis. “ESSENCE provides life-saving capabilities and we’re proud to support DHSS and MHS with a faster, more efficient, and more secure system with new medical surveillance capabilities for users around the world.”
Work on the next major release of ESSENCE, Block 3, is underway. Block 3 will further enable ESSENCE to keep up with the latest innovations and trends in medical surveillance and will expand ESSENCE capabilities to incorporate additional new data sources for increased and improved detection and alerting on possible outbreaks or epidemics.
“The ESSENCE project has pushed us to go beyond what we’ve done with other federal agencies within the Military Health System. Because of the scope and scale of this project, the power ESSENCE holds to ultimately keep our world safe is tremendous. We’re honored to be considered a trusted provider of services that make the system even more effective,” said Adam Welsh, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Health Sector of Apptis.
The successful development and deployment of Block 2 was a result of the overall teamwork and collaboration displayed by the entire ESSENCE team – DHSS, Force Health Protection & Readiness (FHP&R), the Tri-Services, Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (JHU-APL), and Apptis’ teaming partners: ABSI, ARCBridge, Vangent, and VIPS.
“The statistical technology expertise that DHSS and ESSENCE stakeholders possess is truly amazing. They know how to monitor, analyze, and interpret medical surveillance data received from approximately 90,000 daily outpatients and emergency department visits in Department of Defense healthcare facilities worldwide. It has been a great opportunity for us to work with and learn from the best,” added Koreen Waz, the Block 2 ESSENCE Program Manager from Apptis. “Combining our expertise in technology services with their knowledge we’ve been able to make ESSENCE easier to use and to provide more comprehensive data, faster for all military facilities and decision makers. The success of the system depends on this.”
